Göltzsch Valley Bridge, Mylau/Saxon Vogtland

Renovation of the Göltzsch Valley Bridge

Service description:

The Göltzsch Valley Bridge, completed in 1851, is the largest brick bridge in the world. As part of the electrification of the Saxony-Franconia main line between Dresden and Nuremberg, the bridge received a new reinforced concrete carriageway trough and 22 catenary masts.

Work began on the eastern side of the line. A working scaffolding was erected over the entire length of the bridge in order to increase the working area on the bridge, which is only 9 m wide. After the dismantling of the tracks and the demolition work, the new roadway trough was built. In some cases, the concrete was pumped over 400 m onto the bridge. After completion of the track construction, the west side of the Göltzschtal bridge was also electrified. All work was carried out during single-track railway operation, and they had to be stopped when a train passed at 70 km/h.
